The primary purpose of State Traffic School is to promote safe and responsible driving. The goal of State Traffic School is to provide an educational program which renews a driver’s outlook regarding traffic safety and to instill a positive attitude toward highway and traffic safety by encouraging an understanding and recognition of personal driving behaviors which will result in a reduced number of deaths and injuries related to vehicular crashes and moving hazardous violations.
A person charged with an infraction who is eligible and wishes to have the case proceed as a misdemeanor (See Pen. Code §§17(d)(1), 19.8) must make a court appearance before attending traffic school to make that election. By attending traffic school without appearing in court to make that election, the person waives the right to proceed as a misdemeanor.
In general, you should not get any points on your driving record if you complete traffic school for a qualifying violation by the due date. You will need to timely appear or contact the court about your election to attend traffic school. If you have a noncommercial license, a confidential conviction will appear on your driving record. If you have a commercial driver’s license, a conviction will appear on your driving record.
State Traffic School classes last 4 hours and are conducted at various times and locations throughout the Commonwealth. It can take up to six weeks (possibly longer for rural areas) for the driver to be scheduled for a class. If the driver does not complete the class on their scheduled date their license will be suspended. The cost is $15 and the driver must enroll within 30 days of their referral/conviction date in order to avoid suspension of their driving privileges. The main reason most people take traffic school online is for diversion of a traffic ticket. In other words, it’s a part of a plea with the court with the incentive of reducing their traffic ticket fine or not reporting it to the DMV (thus helping to keep insurance premium rates lower) by completing an approved driver improvement course. Incentives vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction but the concept is the same. All traffic schools are private entities and charge a fee. Courses range from four to eight hours and, depending on jurisdiction and local rules, can be taken online or in the classroom.
Taking a defensive driving class online gives drivers the freedom to complete the course on their time schedule. Students enrolled in a CA internet traffic school can stop and start the course when they want and complete the class in multiple sessions. This gives drivers the ability to finish the course at whatever speed they need. GoToTrafficSchool offers a driver improvement course that is equivalent to the eight hour in -person course. The course is not timed, however, so students may even be able to complete the course sooner. Furthermore, students taking traffic classes through GoToTrafficSchool have an additional attempt to complete the online course if they do not pass the test on the first attempt. Students can also opt for an Unlimited Course Re-takes upgrade that allows a student to re-take the course if he or she does not pass during the first two attempts. Online traffic school completed through GoToTrafficSchool is easy to follow and simple to complete for all drivers.

The California Traffic School course consists of 10 lessons full of reading material, videos, animations, interactive exercises, and games. You'll review California traffic laws and learn defensive driving techniques that will help keep you safe on the road. After each lesson is a short multiple-choice quiz. You must pass the quiz to proceed to the next lesson. Most people pass the lesson quizzes on their first attempt. But don't worry--you can take the lesson quizzes as many times as you need to pass at no additional cost.
After you have verified that you and the violation meet the above requirements, you may sign up and pay by mail, in person, or online (link below). If you sign up online, your traffic school due date and link to the Traffic School agreement will be on your confirmation page once paid. You are generally given three months from your date of payment to complete Traffic School. You may attend only the DMV-Approved Classroom and Online Traffic Schools.
Once the student completes the course, they are required to take a 25 question, multiple-choice quiz. They must get 18 out of 25 correct to pass the course and have their completion reported to the CA DMV. As long as the student provides the correct citation number, traffic court information and driver license; the student’s traffic court will apply the DMV report to their case, mask the ticket, and the point(s) will not go onto the student/driver's record.
iDriveSafely is arguably the fastest online traffic school in California as they do not have a course timer. That means you can just skip through each page over and over again until you get to one of the quizzes. Since the quizzes are so simple, you should breeze right through it without having to read anything. If you fail a quiz, don’t even worry about it. You just have to take a different version of it over again. You can’t fail this traffic school so there’s really not much to be worried about. Just make sure you don’t upgrade to their video-based course as the text-based traffic school course will be much faster. Oh, and in case you’re worried, they are a certified course in California, they’ve had more than 5 million people “graduate” from their courses, they have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, they offer 24/7/365 live customer support, and you can log in or out of the course whenever you want. So yeah, it’s pretty legit.
Other than the obvious, all programs must follow the same rules and guidelines, and are very similar. Most of the online traffic school courses contain a combination of text, audio and video and require a short exit quiz at the end of the course. The type of presentation and difficulty will vary from school to school. However, required course time and passing score requirements are dictated by the licensing authority and are the same for all traffic schools. The difference between traffic school online and a classroom traffic school course basically comes down to convenience. For example, you can complete the course at your convenience rather than all in one sitting because the online course allows you to complete the course in segments by simply logging in and out as your time permits. As an added bonus, Improv Traffic School also provides free VIP tickets to the Improv Comedy Club upon completion of the online course.
