All issued tickets will have a financial penalty associated with them, and the fines in California are some of the highest in the country, ranging into hundreds of dollars. Some tickets will also include having points placed on your record. While non-moving violations and failed equipment will not earn you any points, moving violations come with a penalty of 1 or 2 points depending on the infraction. In general, the penalties are accrued as follows:
Once again, the state of California has made this easy for you. The courts require online traffic schools to notify the court electronically and there is nothing else you need to do. Of course, it is a good idea to verify that the court has received your electronic completion certificate. Mistakes can be made and the last thing you want after taking the course is to receive no credit. Make sure you do your due diligence.
Certificate of Completion: As soon as you receive your Certificate for completing the course you need to turn it into the Clerk of Court Traffic Division in the county that issued you the ticket to avoid points being added to your license. If the course is required by a Judge Order or Court Order then immediately turn in your Certificate to the supplied address.
If you have a noncommercial driver’s license and the court permits you to attend traffic school for an eligible offense, after completion of the course a confidential conviction will be recorded on your driving record at the DMV, but you will not receive a point on your driving record. The court may approve traffic school for a driver with a commercial driver’s license if the eligible offense occurred in a noncommercial vehicle. After completion of an approved program by a driver with a commercial driver’s license, a conviction will appear on the driving record at the DMV, but a point will not appear for the offense.
If you were cited while driving with a Class A, B or Commercial Class C driver's license, on or after January 1, 2013, but you were not driving a commercial vehicle at the time of the violation, you may attend traffic school, if eligible. Although the DMV will not assess the point count on your driving record, they will not hold the conviction as confidential and therefore your insurance may be adversely affected.

Paper certificates may only be issued to drivers with out of state licenses, who will then be responsible for notifying the court with the signed original certificate. California licensed drivers should rely on the schools to notify the court.
Beginning January 1st, 2013, the California Department of Motor Vehicles officially began overseeing operations, approvals and completion processing for all traffic schools in the state. With this change in place all online traffic school providers must secure new approvals directly through the DMV. This also makes completion processing a more streamlined process than it was when dealing with the 58 individual superior courts.
Attending a traffic school classroom is the traditional method. The classrooms are usually held on the weekends so that students can meet the eight hour requirement. Typically taught by retired police officers or aspiring comedians, the hours are usually filled by watching videos that cover the required topics. The benefits of taking your traffic school in a classroom include the ability to interact with your instructor if you have questions and the relief of finishing it all in one day. Unfortunately, most people find the long hours unbearable, the instructors boring and the inconvenience intolerable, and long for a course easier to accomplish.
When a driver receives a traffic ticket for a moving violation, the state adds points to the motorist’s DMV record. These points can stay on an individual’s license for three to 10 years depending on the severity of the violation. Minor traffic violations, such as turning when there is no right on red or not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, are worth one point on an individual’s license. Car accidents and license suspension are also offenses worth one point. These points stay on a driver’s license for up to three years. The court may offer drivers cited with one-point violations the option to attend traffic school to remove the point from their record. More serious traffic violations such as reckless driving are worth two points on a driver’s license. A serious traffic offense can stay on a driver’s license for up to ten years. Drivers who receive too many points may have their license suspended or revoked for one year. Attending a driving safety course for ticket and point dismissal is available for motorist every 18 months.
You may choose to attend Traffic Violator School for a vehicle code violation that is assigned one point only. Violations committed by a pedestrian or a bicyclist are not assigned point counts. To verify whether a violation is assigned a point count, review the Traffic Bail Schedule to be sure you need to attend traffic school. Look up your violation(s) and check the far right column to see if there is a DMV point attached to the violation(s). If you pay the $52 administrative Traffic School fee for committing a violation that is not eligible for Traffic School, the fee will not be refunded.
